SECRET REGRET OF THE DAY: December 23, 2015

I regret not doing more after you texted me suicide threats. I regret not being able to stop you. I regret letting you down. I feel like an idiot, after you told me what happened I can not believe I was stupid enough to tell you that next time you felt like that to pick up the freaking phone and talk to some one. You did talk to some one. You told me and I let you down. I’m so sorry.

  1. Wow, so sad! Is this person still alive? Did you check to make sure that he or she was alright? You probably thought that you were doing the right thing, but always take those kinds of threats seriously! You could have been the difference between life and death. He or she must have really trusted and respected you to reach out and tell you that.

  2. That was too big for you to handle on your own, you might have been able to help a little, but not enough as a trained psychologist, psychiatrist or support group with people who are going through the same thing and are able to understand. In my experience, people struggling with the same issues, but who want to get better are the best support. Sometimes you feel more isolated when talking to someone who may not be in the same space, through no fault of their own. Forgive yourself. That’s what your friend wants you to do, now that he’s free of his suffering.

  3. At the end of the day there is only so much you can do to help, and no matter how painful it is to watch, you cannot own someone else’s choices.
